South Korea’s rise to become a trending study abroad destination
South Korea, situated in the center of Asia, frequently receives media attention despite being a relatively small country. It garners recognition for various reasons, including its complicated past with its northern neighbor, the worldwide success of K-pop stars, the popularity of Korean dramas, its spicy and flavorful cuisine, and an impressive internet penetration rate of 97%. Additionally, South Korea, officially known as the Republic of Korea, is home to numerous global corporate giants such as Samsung, Hyundai, KIA, and boasts a highly educated population with a literacy rate of 98%, along with a professional work culture that has earned it accolades.
South Korea has recently gained prominence as a top study destination for international students, with over 40 universities featured in the latest QS Rankings list. As the 10th largest economy in the world, South Korea is now a popular choice among students aspiring to study abroad.
Higher education institutions in South Korea are divided into three categories: junior colleges, universities, and graduate schools, offering master’s and doctoral degree program like Seoul National University, which ranks 29th globally in the QS Rankings, and attracts the most international students among these universities.
Most universities in South Korea offer English-taught courses, and many also provide introductory Korean language courses for international students. The government’s Study in Korea initiative aims to welcome 200,000 international students to Korean universities by 2023.
To manage their expenses, students often take up part-time jobs or internships. A Korean D-2 Student Visa allows for up to 20 hours of work per week during the academic year and an unlimited amount during breaks. After graduation, students can apply for a D-10 visa to seek employment opportunities.
