United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, Malta, Australia, the Netherlands, English-taught programmes in Germany or Italy: to study in English, the IELTS is the most widely requested test in the world. Taking the IELTS in Tunisia has become common: thousands of candidates do so every year. Here is how to choose the right version, register, what determines the price, where to take the test in Tunis and Sousse, and how to prepare effectively.

Worldwide Studies is a British Council approved IELTS agent: we can guide you with registration and choosing a session.

What is the IELTS?

The International English Language Testing System assesses four skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Each skill is scored from 0 to 9 in half-band steps, and you get an Overall band score. The test is accepted by thousands of universities and organisations around the world.

Academic, General Training or UKVI?

  • IELTS Academic: for higher education (bachelor's, master's, doctorate). This is the version required by universities.

  • IELTS General Training: for immigration, work or certain vocational programmes.

  • IELTS for UKVI: the version recognised by UK immigration services, required for certain visas or preparatory programmes in the United Kingdom.

If in doubt, check each university's "English language requirements" page. Taking the wrong version means having to retake the test.

On paper or on computer?

  • On computer: more sessions, faster results (often within a few days), Listening, Reading and Writing taken on screen.

  • On paper: the classic format, results generally in about two weeks.

In both cases, the Speaking test takes place face to face with an examiner.

Where to take the IELTS in Tunisia?

The test is organised by the British Council and its approved partners, mainly in Tunis and Sousse, with sessions in other cities at certain times. Computer-based sessions are frequent, paper-based ones a little less so. During the application period (from autumn to spring), places go quickly: book at least 3 to 4 weeks in advance.

How to register?

  1. Choose the version (Academic, General, UKVI) and the format (paper or computer).

  2. Select the city and the date.

  3. Register online with your passport (recommended ID: the one you will also use for your applications and visa).

  4. Pay the registration fee.

  5. Receive your confirmation and test notification, then your Speaking time.

How much does the IELTS cost in Tunisia?

The price is set in dinars by the organiser and revised regularly. It depends on:

  • the version (IELTS for UKVI is generally more expensive);

  • sometimes the format;

  • options: transfer or cancellation (with fees depending on the notice given), score review (Enquiry on Results), One Skill Retake where offered.

To find out the current fee, check the organiser's website or ask us.

On test day

  • Listening (about 30 minutes): four recordings, varied questions.

  • Reading (60 minutes): three long texts, academic-style in the Academic version.

  • Writing (60 minutes): two tasks, including describing a graph (Academic) and an argumentative essay.

  • Speaking (11 to 14 minutes): a three-part interview, sometimes on a different day.

Bring the ID document you used to register. Without it, you will not be able to take the test.

Results

You receive your Test Report Form online and then, depending on the format, on paper. Most universities consider the result valid for two years. You can generally send your results to several institutions free of charge.

What score should you aim for?

Usual benchmarks (to be checked for each programme):

  • 5.5 to 6.0: foundation programmes or some bachelor's degrees;

  • 6.0 to 6.5: most bachelor's and master's degrees;

  • 7.0 and above: very selective programmes, medicine, law, some top universities.

Many universities also require a minimum per skill (for example no less than 5.5 or 6.0 in Writing).

How to prepare

  1. Take a full mock test under real conditions.

  2. Work on Writing, often the lowest score: structure, linking words, meeting the word count.

  3. Read articles in English every day (press, popular science).

  4. Listen to podcasts and lectures in English.

  5. Practise Speaking with a partner or a teacher.

  6. Manage your time: it is one of the main causes of failure in Reading.

Allow 1 to 3 months of preparation depending on your starting level.

IELTS, TOEFL or Duolingo?

The IELTS is not the only accepted test. Compare with our article IELTS or TOEFL: which one to choose? and our guide Duolingo English Test.

  • United Kingdom (UCAS): take the IELTS by the autumn of your final year of secondary school at the latest, so you can retake it before universities reply.

  • Canada, Australia, Ireland: plan the test 3 to 6 months before the visa application.

  • English-taught programmes in Europe (Netherlands, Germany, Italy, Scandinavia): the result is often required at the application stage, in winter.

  • Malta and language stays: a result is not always required, but a level test is useful for choosing the right course.

Always leave room for a second attempt in case the first score is not enough.

Key takeaway: choose the right version of the IELTS, book your session several weeks in advance and leave room for a second attempt before your deadlines.
